Bridget Jones Diary

Since I haven’t read the book, I’ll only be talking about the movie πŸ˜‰

It’s impossible for me to count how many times I’ve watched this movie. It must be somewhere between twenty and a hundred πŸ˜‰ I simply love it. For those of you who hasn’t seen it (shame on you) here’s a short recap.

Bridget Jones is in her thirties, single, chubbyΒ and hates it. It starts with us seeing her on the 1st of January on her way to her mothers annual “Chicken Curry Buffet”.

Her mother always tries to set her up with some guy, and this year was no exception. First the mothers tells Bridget to put on some different clothes, a “lovely” red-flowered printed dress. Really bad. The mother is such a great character, she still live in God knows which decade, and she thinks that she’s being very helpful when in fact she’s just being embarrassing. I love her πŸ™‚

The man she has picked for Bridget is called Mark Darcy, a human rights lawyer, recently divorced from a Japanese girl. The mothers comment on this is “Cruel race”. That’s just the funniest racism I’ve ever heard. Mostly because she says it, like it’s something everybody thinks.

So, we are walking towards Mark Darcy, seeing him from behind, he’s tall, dark and handsome. Then he turns and is wearing a reindeer jumper. Such a beautiful moment. Okay, my short recap is going wrong, I’ll speed it up.

Mark Darcy’s speaks ill of Bridget thinking that she didn’t hear him, and then her hatred for Darcy is growing.

Then Bridget decides to start a diary, keeping track of her miserable life. First of all she wants to lose weight, then always put last nights panties in the laundry basket and then stop falling for the wrong men.

Bridget works in a publisher’s office, in a rather dead-end up, but she never complains, because she has a very sexy boss, Mr. Daniel Cleaver. She secretly in love with him, and they start flirting a little bit. And the flirting leads to fucking.

While she’s screwing Cleaver, she occasionally runs into Darcy, and it always ends unpleasantly, letting her hatred for Darcy grow even more.

You probably have already guessed the ending, but that doesn’t matter. The Mark Darcy figure is based on Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, my all time dream guy. And in Bridget Jones Mark Darcy is played by Colin Firth, and he’s also playing Mr. Darcy in my favourite adaptions of Pride and Prejudice. So, I love Colin Firth, but all time favourite man from Britain. πŸ˜‰

I wont reveal all the funny scenes from the movie, only one “The one with the blue soup”. Bridget has invited all of her friends over for a birthday dinner, and to celebrate her first succesful newscast. (she changes job, during the movie) She wants to cook herself. First the soup, she’s making asparagus soup, and they should be tied together with string, so she chooses some blue string. And the soup then turns blue. It may sound stupid, but I still laugh my ass off when I see this. It’s not so fun in writing. πŸ˜‰

Bridget Jones is playing by Renee Zellweger, and she’s just brilliant. It’s a feel good movie and even when I’ve been going through my darkest days, this movie has still managed to make me smile.

It’s british and clever, the perfect combination. The Bridget character is so loveable, and she’s just as damaged as the rest of us. And that’s what made me fall in love with her instantly.

It’s very real. Of course there are situations that’s very unlikely to happen to the rest of us, but all of her dilemma’s are the same as most of us. Falling in love with the wrong guy, being cheated on, parents separating, being single, get way to drunk and have our perfect moments somehow ruined.

I’m not sure why I suddenly felt like writing about this film, but maybe I just needed the cheering up, from just thinking about it πŸ˜‰

If you haven’t watched it, watch it. If you’ve watched it and didn’t like it, watch it again and look for all the brilliant details of the characters. If you’ve watched it and loved it, watch it again πŸ˜‰

I somehow get the feeling that the “shame on you” part was aimed at me… sorry to disaopint you, but I have seen it. twice. I even made my boyfriend watch it πŸ˜›
I am not a huge fan, but it’s entertaining πŸ˜‰

  2. No, wasn’t aimed at you.. Not at all.. I’m pretty sure that I’ve talk about this movie in your presence and you told that you weren’t as hooked as me πŸ˜‰
But I guess that’s because you are not in love with Colin Firth. That does give the movie an extra boost for me πŸ˜‰ And well, I also find Hugh Grant rather sexy.. So, I drool all over the place..

  3. stenfalk says:

  5. Really?? Why didn’t you like it? πŸ™‚

  6. LHK says:

Just not my kind of humor I think…

  7. Yeah, it is very british.. Don’t you like Love Actually and Four Weddings and a Funeral?

  8. LHK says:

Dont remember Love Actually, so for sure I dont love it, and Four Weddings and a funeral I never liked at all… My mom loves it…. not me…
By all means I don’t think its because its british, I love Britan… I just think its because they are a bit too much like everyday life, I get enough of that, well like every day, you know… πŸ˜‰

  9. Oh okay.. Then I get it.. πŸ™‚ That’s an acceptable reason for not to like it.. Hehe…But it’s nice to know, so then I wont bring it alone to movie night πŸ˜‰

  10. LHK says:
